In 1876 this first center of higher learning was established in Lakeport by John A. Kelly and his wife.    He was a graduate of John Hopkins. The first year there were 54 students. The year was divided into three terms. The work continued through the fifth year, until a student had learned the entire course and had become a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts. The first commencement was held June 9, 1881 when William J. Mewhinney received the B. A. Degree, James L. Wood the M. A. Degree, S. K. Welch and S. C. Hasting the L. L. D.

The college classes were held in a building standing at the Northeast corner of Twelfth and Forbes Streets. The College had closed its doors by 1884, about the time that Professor John Overholser founded the Lakeport Academy.
